The Management Ibiza

A design studio's website is the only kind where the shop and the product are the same object. A restaurant's site is not the meal. A studio's site is a sample of the work, and every visitor reads it that way whether or not they realise it.

That produces a recognisable failure. The studio, knowing it is being judged, builds something ambitious — an unconventional navigation, an intro animation, type set for effect rather than reading. It demonstrates capability and simultaneously demonstrates the thing clients most fear about designers: that the work will be about the designer.

The site that wins work usually does the opposite. It is restrained, quick, and organised so that a busy person can find three relevant projects in under a minute — which is itself the strongest possible argument that this studio designs for users rather than for portfolios.

The second problem is how the work is shown. Most studio portfolios present the artefact alone: the finished catalogue, the logo on a mockup, the printed piece photographed well. It looks good and it proves almost nothing, because a reader cannot tell craft from luck without knowing what the problem was.

What changes that is short and rarely written:

• What the client needed, in one or two sentences.
• What made it difficult — a fixed budget, a print deadline, a brand that could not be touched, a catalogue that had to be reprinted every season.
• What was decided and why. The reasoning, not the adjectives.

There is also a category of work that is systematically undersold: print production management. Choosing stock, handling proofs, coordinating a printer, checking colour on press. Clients who have been through a print job that went wrong value this above the design itself, and it is almost never mentioned — because it feels like logistics rather than creative work. To the client paying for it, it is the part that guarantees the rest arrives intact.
